TURN IT AROUND! FLASHCARDS FOR EDUCATION FUTURES
ALI partnered with artists, students, and educators at Arizona State University, Open Society Foundations, and UNESCO to build a toolkit for reimagining climate education in an era of ecological emergency. As producers of the Turn it Around! project, we began building a youth- and artist-driven movement to reimagine our relationship to the planet, while developing an alternative and open curriculum as a model for change in climate education. It started with an international open call for young artists and writers to contribute images and responses to seven key prompts, and it turned into a set of flashcards designed by youth for teachers, policymakers, decision makers, and others - we are turning around the ordinary order of knowledge sharing, and letting the generation most impacted by climate change teach others what must be done.
Since then, the Turn it Around! project has grown into a global youth movement, equipped with the flashcards as a curricular tool, a cadre of youth ambassadors and organizers, and an international network of young artists, activists, educators, and leaders all offering new imaginings of our relationship to the planet and one another. Turn it Around! has appeared at COP 26 and COP 27, UNESCO’s Futures of Education Summit, and the Learning Planet Festival, to name just a few. It has also spawned additional editions, in partnership with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations University Network (ASEAN), and been translated into 4 languages. See the whole project at
