EQUIMUNDO - MAPPING THE LANDSCAPE OF FATHERHOOD AND MALE CAREGIVING IN THE U.S.

9 ‘Issue territories’ adjacent to fatherhood advocacy in the US, from Who Cares About America’s Caregivers?, Equimundo 2022

Beginning in early 2022, ALI has been a consultant with the global nonprofit Equimundo: The Center for Masculinities and Social Justice, using artists’ literacies frameworks. As a world leader in advocacy, research, and narrative change around healthy masculinities and gender equality - including through its international MenCare Global campaign and the Boyhood Initiative - Equimundo wanted to better understand the issue landscape surrounding fatherhood in the United States, as part of an emergent effort to achieve caregiving equality in the US - one of the most unequal and parentally unsupportive countries in the world.

To get this work started, ALI conducted a nationwide engagement with advocates, service providers, thought leaders, community organizers, policymakers, researchers, care economy experts, and dads themselves to map the national ‘landscape,’ so that Equimundo had a strong foundation of knowledge and relationships from which to build its strategic base. The process included facilitating two convenings of national leaders and the cultivation of an emergent network of fatherhood advocates and supporters. The resulting report, “Who Cares About America’s Caregivers? Laying the Groundwork for a National Strategy to Support Fathers” was launched in December 2022, paired with a panel discussion at the Martin Luther King Jr. Library in Washington, D.C.
